Waves of Hope: Four Children with Autism Make History with a 60 KM International Sea Swim

In a moment that has redefined what the world believes children with autism are capable of, four young swimmers from Yadhavi Sports Academy for Special Needs completed a historic 60-kilometer, two-way international open-water relay swim across the Palk Strait, connecting Dhanushkodi, India, to Talaimannar, Sri Lanka, and back. The achievement has been officially recognized by the World Book of Records, marking a global first for children on the autism spectrum.

Titled “Waves of Hope – India ↔ Sri Lanka Two-Way Sea Swim”, the event was organized by the Yadhavi Foundation for Special Needs and Yadhavi Sports Academy, in association with the Indian Autism Center.

The Swimmers Who Made History

At the heart of this remarkable achievement were four extraordinary young athletes — Master Gunturu Lav, Master Gunturu Kush, Master Meka Sri Ashvath, and Master Thanvesh N. Together, they became the youngest known team of children with autism to complete a 60-kilometer two-way international open-water relay, creating a milestone that extends far beyond competitive sport.

Between just 9 and 11 years of age, these swimmers had already participated in demanding open-water events and national competitions through Yadhavi Sports Academy, demonstrating years of disciplined preparation and determination.

Their relay was completed in a continuous 24-hour format, a grueling endurance challenge even for seasoned adult athletes. Beginning at Arichal Munai on 18 April at 3:30 PM and concluding on 19 April at 9:27 AM, the young swimmers navigated strong currents, changing tides, unpredictable weather, and complete darkness. Their achievement followed eight months of intensive preparation, combining structured pool training with progressive open-water conditioning.

Supporting them throughout the expedition was a 34-member professional crew, including escort boats, medical personnel, ocean safety experts, and technical coordinators, ensuring world-class safety standards at every stage of the journey. Medical support was provided by Dr. Kamakshi Memorial Hospital, while the World Book of Records recognition was presented by Dr. Suchita Shukla, Dr. Priyanka Shukla, and Dr. Tithi Shukla.

A Mission Rooted in Years of Preparation

Founded by Mr. Sathish Sivakumar, Founder and Head Coach, Yadhavi Sports Academy was established to provide children with special needs the opportunity to grow through sport, structured skill development, and inclusive coaching. The academy believes that every child deserves the chance to discover their strengths, build confidence, and realise their full potential.

Over the years, Yadhavi has transformed that vision into measurable impact. Every milestone represents confidence gained, barriers broken, and lives transformed.

• 500+ children trained through inclusive sports programmes
• 70 students representing Yadhavi at national and international events
• A historic 165 KM open-sea relay completed by young swimmers

• Growth in national event participation from 25 students in 2022 to 40 students in 2025

These achievements laid the foundation for the academy’s greatest milestone to date. Among them are Lakshay Krishnakumar’s Asian Record in open-water swimming, a 15 KM swim from Neelankarai to Marina Beach, the 165 KM relay from Cuddalore to Marina Beach completed by 14 young swimmers in 2024, and participation in India’s first Oceanman event in 2025, which earned invitations to compete internationally in Dubai. Yadhavi’s swimmers have also continued to win medals at state and national championships while competing in prestigious events including the Kochi River Swimmathon and Goa Sea Swimmathon.

Why the Palk Strait Swim Matters

The expedition was conducted under Yadhavi’s awareness campaign, “Autism in the Blue – Embracing Awareness.” From the very beginning, it was envisioned as much more than an endurance swim. Its purpose was to promote autism awareness, inspire families and communities, and challenge long-standing perceptions about what children with autism can achieve.

The crossing became a powerful demonstration that inclusive sports can unlock confidence, resilience, independence, and extraordinary potential.

More Than a World Record

For Yadhavi, the significance of this achievement reaches far beyond recognition.

When a child with autism swims across an ocean, the world begins to see potential where it once saw limitation. The expedition reminds us that ability is never defined by diagnosis—it is revealed through opportunity, belief, and determination.

More importantly, it encourages society to move beyond labels and create environments where every child has the opportunity to thrive, compete, and succeed.

For Yadhavi, this historic achievement is not the destination—it is another milestone in a much larger journey.

The academy continues to expand its inclusive sports programmes, promote autism awareness, and create opportunities for children with special needs to participate in national and international competitions.

Future initiatives include additional international endurance events, expanded training programmes, nationwide awareness campaigns, and greater global opportunities for young athletes.

As the four young swimmers returned to the shores of Dhanushkodi, they brought back far more than a World Record. They returned with a message that continues to inspire families, educators, communities, and athletes around the world—that every child deserves the opportunity to be recognised for their abilities, encouraged to pursue their dreams, and empowered to achieve the extraordinary.

For Yadhavi, this is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of many more stories waiting to be written.
